Description
MSH(melanocyte-stimulating hormone) stimulates the production of melanin in the melanocyte mother cells in the hair and skin. The surface of melanocytes expresses a melanocortin receptor called MSH-R, a member of the GPCR family. It's a receptor for the MSH signaling molecule.
After MSH is secreted from the pituitary gland, it binds to the MSH-R receptor on the melanocyte, opening the signaling pathway and activating the production of downstream melanin. As long as the interaction between MSH and MSH-R can be interfered with, the activation of this signaling pathway can be blocked, and the production of skin melanin can be inhibited.
Nonapeptide-1, an analogue of MSH-α, has been shown to have whitening properties. Its amino acid sequence is very similar to that of MSH-α.
